Market Report: Qatar’s Education Sector – Goals, challenges and solutions required

Qatar is one of the Gulf region’s fastest growing education sectors with the construction of 8 to 12 new schools with a capacity of 1,500 to 2,000 students per school expected to be required each year by 2022.

The past five years of growth in the Qatari education system have affected each of the primary, secondary and tertiary levels, as school enrollment keeps pace with Qatar’s rapid rise in population, which has tripled in the decade 2002-2012, growing by 11.6% per year on average to reach 2.4 million in 2016. In the academic year 2013-2014, over 245,000 students were enrolled across all government and private schools, a year-on-year increase of 5.6%.

Growth of this nature has in large part been encouraged and sustained through rising levels of government funding which has allowed for the construction of new education facilities and the support of a wide range of innovative development and reform programmes delivered by the Supreme Education Council (SEC –which has recently been disbanded and its roles taken over by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education).

The reformation of Qatar’s education system has been a long and rigorous process that continues at a rapid pace as the Ministry of Education aims to create the right conditions for Qatari students to succeed. This process entails the leveraging of emerging educational technologies housed within advanced learning spaces and overseen by well-trained, digitally astute teaching staff. In turn, the provision of such a learning environment is helping to give Qatari students the tools they need to become highly innovative thinkers who are capable of excelling in the fast-paced digital world, throughout their education and beyond it.
